FELLOWSHIP FAQs

Please read thoroughly before contacting us directly.

1) Can I submit a letter of intent for more than one fellowship?
You may submit for more than one fellowship - just be sure to indicate clearly which fellowships you are applying for on your envelope, and in your personal statement, please specify which fellowship is your first choice. Also, be sure to fulfill ALL requirements for each fellowship you seek. You only need to send one copy of those application materials that overlap (resume, letters of recommendation, etc.).

2) Your fellowship description says that applicants must live in New York City. I live in _________. Does this mean I can't apply?
We accept applications from artists not currently living in New York City; however, applicants must be available to travel to NYC at their own expense for interviews conducted during the months of February and March, and also must be willing and able to relocate to the NYC metro area for the duration of the fellowship, June 2012 through June 2013. NYTW is unable to provide housing, relocation or job assistance. Inability to attend regular meetings and events during the fellowship year may be considered grounds for discontinuation of the Fellowship.

3) Are non-U.S. citizens eligible to apply?
Yes. International applicants must take full responsibility for arranging their travel, travel documents, and housing accommodations. Inquire with the U.S. Embassy or the consulate with jurisdiction over your place of permanent residence about visa application procedures. Receipt of fellowship stipend is dependent upon the type of visa secured. If you are not authorized to work in the United States, we will be unable to provide a stipend.

4) When will I be notified if I am invited to submit a full application? What materials will I be required to send?
Applicants will be notified after January 3rd if we would like to request further materials. At that point, candidates for the directing fellowship will be asked to submit a work sample of a full-length piece with a concept statement. Candidates for the playwriting fellowship will be asked to submit a full-length play. All candidates will be required to submit 2 letters of recommendation. The deadline for these materials will be 5pm on Friday, January 20th, 2012.

5) Can my recommenders send their letters directly to NYTW?
Letters of recommendation will only be requested of those who have been invited to submit a full application. Although we prefer to receive your complete application in one envelope, we understand that this may be difficult regarding the letters of recommendation - therefore your recommenders can send their letters directly to NYTW. Please be sure that they put your name and the fellowship you are applying for clearly on the envelope and in their letters. Please instruct them to send their letters with sufficient time for delivery before the deadline. If we are missing a letter of recommendation, your application will be considered incomplete.

6) What happens if I'm invited to interview?
Candidates will be contacted by mid-February to schedule an initial interview. If necessary, this first round interview can be completed via phone or Skype. Candidates still in consideration will be contacted to schedule a second interview in mid-March. If invited to a second interview, candidates must be available for an in-person meeting at NYTW.

7) When is the June retreat?
Specific days have not yet been determined for the June 2012 Fellows retreat. Retreats typically take place over a three-day weekend, Friday through Sunday. Specific dates will be sent out with Fellowship offers. If invited to interview, please inform us of any known conflicts during the month of June.

8) When do the Emerging Artists Fellowship meetings occur?
Meetings take place once to twice per month, and are usually scheduled for weekday evenings or weekend days.

9) How much are Fellowship stipends?
In the past they have ranged from $500 to $1000. It is unclear how much funding will be available for Fellowships in 2012.

(10) Do I need to be an Artist of Color to apply? Who qualifies as an Artist of Color?
Yes, the fellowship is specifically designed to identify artists of color. However, "artist of color" is an obtuse term, mostly referring to self-identification by anyone who feels that their experience is NOT the "white America" experience; this could therefore include a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and/or experiences.
